Is it safe for a 75 year-old man to be eating an entire half-gallon of ice cream a day?

My 75 year-old dad does this and I'm worried that he's digging his own grave. In addition to ice cream, he eats whatever else he can get his hands on. He's retired and has no hobbies, just sits around the house all day reading/watching TV and boredom leads him to overeating.

He's also lazy and gets no exercise. For example, he drives everywhere even though there are plenty of shops and businesses within a 5 or 10-minute walk of where he lives. Is it safe for a 75 year-old man to be eating an entire half-gallon of ice cream a day?
Your concern is well-founded. Not only is eating a half gallon of ice cream daily imprudent and unhealthy for a 75 year old-----it would be imprudent for anyone! It may be that your dad is suffering from depression, and while it may be difficult for you to convince him to do so, he really should be seen by a physician. Is it safe for a 75 year-old man to be eating an entire half-gallon of ice cream a day?
this is what my grandparents do.

they have breakfast, go out every day for lunch at 2:00, then eat cookies and ice cream for dinner.

it's not HEALTHY, but then again they don't have any health problems that they know about and aren't even too much overweight.

sometimes my parents will make them a dinner with tons of leftovers so they at least eat something else.

you could try making him some other kind of snack that isnt ice cream.

oh, and my grandparents are in their 80's.
definatly not the best thing. like others have suggested try to get him to eat other things like sherbet and frozen yogurt. gradually decrease the junk that he eats. and increase the nutricious stuff. maybe you could even do things with him every now and then to get him out of the house and enjoying life. and check up on him every so so often.
It doesn't sound like a healthy life-style, but he is an adult and, most likely, knows the possible consequences of what he does.

While it is obvious you care about your father, you must remember that he IS the father and you are the son. He will resent any effort on your part to tell him what he should do. When you reach our age, you will (hopefully) understand how important our independence is to us. We have worked for years to be independent, and are not willingly going to give that up.
Let him do what he wants. If he isn't digging his own grave, Obama Care will dig it for him. He will get little to no healthcare with Obama Care. Let the old guy eat as much ice cream as he wants.
my solution would be... steal all the ice-cream then make him walk to the shop as he CAN'T find his keys as they have misteriously gone missing...
no its not very healthy try getting him sherbert or frozen yogurt or even yogurt
